Treating Dandruff: the myths and the true remedies

Warm Autumn morning, eyeliner perfect, hair bouncy and full of volume (courtesy of the fabulous Moroccan Oil range) and it’s shaping up to be a perfect day. That is, until you notice those little white flakes on your shoulder, and your scalp has been feeling a little itchy recently… hence the horror sets in: Dandruff. But what is it? Why do you have it? And most importantly: how do you treat it? Worry not, treating dandruff is easy with Fabriahs help!

What’s the most common scalp problem worldwide? You nailed it: Dandruff. Over 60% of people have been affected at some point in their lives. You’re not alone in your battle, and the best part is, there are things you can do!

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is the shredding of dead skin cells from the scalp – NOT to be confused with a dry scalp. You usually notice dandruff by the presence of grey or white flakes in your hair or on your shoulders.

How is dandruff caused?

Treating DandruffThere are a variety of things that can cause dandruff:

  • Frequent exposure to hot or cold
  • Overuse of hair dryers
  • Stress
  • Hormones
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor scalp hygiene
  • Using the wrong shampoo/conditioner to suit your hair and/or scalp type

The severity of dandruff may fluctuate and it often worsens in Winter. There is also evidence to suggest dandruff can occur as a symptom of an allergic reaction to chemicals in hair gels, sprays, shampoos, hair oils or sometimes even dandruff medications themselves *cough* Ketoconazole.

Treating dandruff:

There have been many wacky remedies for treating dandruff, ranging from soaking your hair in vinegar to the most noteworthy – massaging it with oregano. You won’t catch us doing these, we don’t want to smell like a pizza!

Instead, we’re opting for tried, tested and better/non fragranced remedies to help us on our way to a flake-free head such as:

  • Avoiding chemical-based hair products
  • Better stress management
  • A healthy lifestyle
  • Choosing the right shampoo (look for the ingredient selenium sulphide)

Unfortunately, we can’t send you on a relaxing vacation or issue you with a Magic Mike-esque personal trainer, however, we can offer you our highly effective anti-dandruff range!
