BIG hair: a guide to technique, benefits and style

Calling all Fabriahlites, big hair is back, and it’s here to stay.

Big hair will always be the shrine of the beauty world. It lifts your face, brightens your day and looks amazing! But how can you give yourself dramatic volume and curls every morning without the help of your own stylist, expensive curling tongs and bags of time to create the look?

Our Fabriah stylists have the answers. From perms to blow dries, our team of talented stylists (miracle workers*) spend their days not only creating art in the salons, but making their clients’ hair look big and beautiful in minimal time.

Now that we’re heading into Autumn, wavy, big hair is your perfect accessory. But did you know you can create a more natural, sexy look with wavy hair and it’s a style that can save both time and money. Cue those precious extra minutes on the morning alarm and a few extra pennies for those weekend cocktails!

Top Tip: Show those pins!

No, not that kind!

One of the best tricks our stylists gave us is pin curling. Requiring no heat and minimal products, this style is hair-healthy and bank-friendly!

  • Start by washing your hair the evening before, preferably using curl activating products. One of our personal favourites to use is the L’Oreal Professional Serie Expert Curl Contour Shampoo.
  • Next, section your hair. You don’t want these sections to be too big, otherwise the weight of the hair may loosen the curls. If they’re too small, it could cause unwanted frizz.
  • Take each section of hair and twist to the head (you can do this around your finger).
  • Pin the hair in place with hair grips, and wait until hair is fully dried. If needed, you can sleep with these grips in.
  • When it’s dry, shake it out and backcomb at the roots.
  • There you have it, beautiful texture and waves!

This is done by washing your hair the night before and rolling sections of hair to the head and pinning them in place with hair grips – you can then sleep with the hair grips in. When it’s dry, shake it out, then backcomb at the roots and you will have beautiful texture and waves.

BIG hair: a guide to technique, benefits and style

Dry shampoo to give you that big hair boost

Dry shampoo promises to give you big hair but requires little in terms of time, money or effort. In addition, it’s the perfect tool to extend your blow dry for an additional day. With daily hair-washing currently being classed as one of beauty’s biggest sins, every fabulous female should have a can on their beauty station.

But why is it so amazing?

In order to create more body and strength within the hair, dry shampoo coats each strand in a chalk-like powder. This powder then adds volume and bounce to limp locks. Additionally, dry shampoo works to cover greasy hair, making it look like you’ve just stepped out the salon!

Whilst dry shampoo is one of our favourite products, not many people are using it to its full potential. To do this, you should use the product on your hair section by section, rather than just a quick spray-all-over. Furthermore, the most coveted technique is to spray directly onto the root, before using a hairdryer for 10 seconds to blast out any residue. This will allow the shampoo to remove the grease form the hair and to give it some volume and texture. It’s a great way to save time, how water and energy in the morning but still look glamorous!

Additional tips and tricks

Heat Protection

If you are using heated tools to obtain your beautiful big hair, always remember to use heat protection products. Trust us, it’s not worth the damage! We recommend GHD Styling Total Volume Foam. This foam is suitable for all hair types, will give you all-over volume that lasts and contains the GHD heat protection system. You couldn’t be in better hands! Also, try to make your style last as long as possible so you don’t have to use heat again the next day. You could heat one day, pin curl the next!

Braiding Beauties

Another top tip to create heat-free, wavy styles is by simply braiding the hair (plaits). If you want a wavy, beachy look like Kate Moss often has, the best thing to do is plait your hair into two braids when it’s wet. Once it’s dried naturally, you can undo them and shake the hair out to leave beautiful wavy, heat-free hair.

Hair Rollers

The final tip from our top stylists is that Hair Rollers can be a great investment. Personally, we recommend the Cloud Nine: Mulberry Black The O Gift Set, but if you’re looking for something a little more budget, try Hair Tools Blue Snooze Rollers. The best thing about hair rollers, is that you don’t have to re-do the whole process to make the style last. You can get away with just using one of two in certain sections, and it’ll further the style for that extra day. Perfect volume and body!
